I'm not sure exactly "what" makes this movie so great, so I'll just list the basics.

The acting was great, although I don't know if I should say amazing, since I don't really know how the mafia in the 40s really act.

The plot was amazing and not predictable at all. Although it's one of those movies where you really had to pay attention, or usually you have to watch it twice to understand everything that is going on. Even though it was 3 hours long, I didn't get bored at any point (which I find happens a lot with long movies.

The soundtrack is unforgettable, the theme is very soothing and I find myself listening to it a lot. It was also very fitting with the movie.

Cinematography and effects. The filming was decent. The movie kept a nice balance between dialogue and action scenes, and the action scenes were in very good taste (meaning they weren't "over-done" with gallons of fake blood and/ or over-exaggerated pain. All the death scenes were highly significant to the plot.

Because of the dialogue/ action balance, this movie can appeal to anyone of all ages. This movie definitely makes my top 5.

I was very excited when I bought the DVD package of this movie. Since then I have watched it about four times and each time it teached me something new.
It is one of the most dramatic and spell-binding, all-time action movies.
Al Pacino and Robert DeNero shined like blazing stars.
This movie is titillating, entertaining and engrossing.
You will laugh and cry at all the machinations and plots by the Dons.
You will enjoy watching this movie from the beginning to the end.
And then you will watch it again and again.
I highly recommend it.

Since i am just a film student, i lack the experience of a proper review, but this movie marked my life, defined my style and quietly whispered to me "what to do"
I'm in love with this particular theme.
